Taulbut House provides women who have children, and who have successfully completed a legitimate alcohol and drug treatment program, the benefits of second stage, supportive housing. Understanding that an important facet of continuing recovery is affordable, safe housing along with reliable, healthy support, Taulbut House offers women the opportunity to continue to build on the knowledge, skills and progress the individual has gained through the formal treatment process.
Women entering Taulbut House must be referred by any of the following: a treatment centre professional, drug and alcohol counselor, social worker, nurse or other allied professional. Women must be committed to continuing their recovery work, particularly as it pertains to the healthy care of their children and they must be willing to participate in a care team approach to their support. A prospective resident may or may not have her child/children in her care but she must be actively working toward this end.
The overriding goal of Taulbut House is Healthy Moms and Healthy Children. Taulbut House works to facilitate this by:
• Providing a safe, secure and supported communal living environment
• Taking a whole team approach to the care of the woman and her children
• Encouraging residents to participate in all aspects of what is required for the normal functioning of a healthy household. This includes participating in house and yard work, meal planning, shopping, preparation and clean-up, budgeting and financial management, and creating and sustaining healthy relationships within the home environment
• Encouraging residents to attend school, participate in employment skills development, or work or volunteer during the duration of their residency if possible
• Requiring residents to participate in programs that will enhance their ability to better understand themselves, their children, and to take care of themselves and their children in healthy ways
A key feature of Taulbut House is the presence of a resident “House Facilitator ” who is responsible for the safety and security of the house and the facilitation of the basic, daily operations of the house. The house facilitator, along with other WRSFV staff members, ensures there is 24/7 support to residents.
Residents pay for their private space in the house according to their income and are responsible for providing their own groceries. There is no time limit imposed on how long a woman may stay.
